Pregnancy is a journey of careful milestones, and ultrasound scans are how we gently check that everything is progressing well β€” for both mother and baby. Many expectant parents feel unsure about which scan is needed at which time. This guide walks you through the typical schedule, trimester by trimester.

Remember: your obstetrician may advise more or fewer scans depending on your individual pregnancy. This is a general roadmap, not a fixed rule.

First trimester (weeks 1–13)

Early / dating scan (6–9 weeks)

This first scan confirms the pregnancy is in the right place (inside the uterus), checks the baby's heartbeat, and accurately dates the pregnancy. If you're unsure of your dates, this scan is the most reliable way to estimate your due date.

NT scan (11–13 weeks)

The nuchal translucency (NT) scan measures a small fluid space at the back of the baby's neck. Combined with a blood test, it helps assess the chance of certain chromosomal conditions. It's an important early screening window.

πŸ’‘ Good to know: the NT scan is time-sensitive β€” it can only be done accurately between 11 and 13 weeks 6 days. If your doctor recommends it, try not to miss this window.

Second trimester (weeks 14–27)

Anomaly scan (18–22 weeks)

Often the most detailed scan of pregnancy, the anomaly (or TIFFA) scan carefully examines the baby's brain, heart, spine, kidneys, limbs and other organs. It also checks the placenta's position and the amount of amniotic fluid. This is where high-resolution imaging truly matters.

Third trimester (weeks 28–40)

Growth scan (28–34 weeks)

Growth scans track the baby's size, weight estimate, position and the blood flow through the umbilical cord (Doppler). They help ensure your baby is growing well and getting enough nourishment.

Well-being / Doppler scans (as advised)

In the final weeks, your doctor may advise additional Doppler or well-being scans, especially if there is high blood pressure, diabetes, or concerns about growth.
