Breast elastography is a painless add-on to a standard breast ultrasound. It measures how firm or soft a breast lump is, giving the radiologist an extra piece of information to help characterise a finding more confidently.

Why stiffness matters

Ultrasound shows the shape, size and outline of a lump. Elastography adds something ultrasound alone cannot show directly — how the tissue responds to a gentle pressure. As a general rule, softer areas behave differently from firmer ones, and this extra information can help a radiologist decide how a finding should be interpreted and whether any further step is needed.

How the test is done

💡 An adjunct, not a replacement. Elastography is used together with ultrasound — and, where advised, mammography — rather than instead of them. The results are always read as part of the whole picture.

What the results mean

Elastography produces a colour map or a value that reflects tissue stiffness. On its own it does not give a diagnosis; instead, it supports the radiologist's overall assessment alongside the ultrasound appearance, your examination and history. Your treating doctor uses all of this together to advise on next steps, which may simply be routine follow-up.
